Anthropic Overhypes AI Ahead of IPO

Anthropic has decided now is a great time to start overhyping its AI. This as they make their way closer to their IPO.

LLM style AI is grossly overhyped. This is something that has been obvious for years now. Contrary to what doomers screaming how AI is going to take over everyone’s jobs and bloomers who say that AI is the next industrial revolution, the AI products completely and utterly failed to deliver on any of these pie in the sky promises (and it won’t get delivered on any time soon, either). In fact, this has been so obvious that with my limited resources, I was still able to put out a video explaining all of this. In fact, I even ran an experiment to see if it can handle something as basic as grammar checking. The AI failed spectacularly at the job. It’s an outcome that wasn’t the least bit surprising, but a result I ended up having that further compounds all I personally knew about AI up to that point.

Recently, an article that was published on AFP and reposted to Yahoo! News detailed some of the more recent obviously made up wild claims about AI. Apparently, according to Anthropic, AI is on the verge of breaking free of human control and there needs to be regulations to prevent something like this from happening. From that report:

Artificial intelligence company Anthropic suggested Thursday a global pause on building the most powerful AI systems as the latest models are beginning to show signs they could escape human control.

The San Francisco-based company, which makes the Claude family of AI models, said in a report that a worldwide slowdown in cutting-edge AI development would “likely be a good thing” — but warned that if only one company stopped, rivals would simply race ahead.

“We believe it would be good for the world to have the option to slow or temporarily pause frontier AI development to enable societal structures and alignment research to keep up with the advance of the technology,” it said.

Now, I’m going to insult your intelligence and point out that this is complete and utter garbage. The pushed idea of AI escaping human control any day now is about as absurd as it gets given how bad LLM AI technology is these days – and no, it’s not showing signs of “improvement”, either.

So, why is Anthropic making these wild claims? It has nothing to do with any major hidden breakthrough in technology. Instead, it is very likely tied to the fact that they are trying to make an Initial Public Offering (IPO) so they can enter their company into the stock market. This is something that the mainstream media is also (naturally) overhyping. From Yahoo! Finance:

Anthropic (Claude) May Be the Only $1 Trillion IPO Worth Buying

With SpaceX potentially just days away from going public, I think many investors expected OpenAI, the parent company of ChatGPT, to be the next trillion-dollar initial public offering (IPO).

However, Anthropic, the parent company of Claude, has beaten them to the punch. The company announced on June 1 that it has confidentially filed to go public with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC).

This filing allows the company to go public following the SEC’s review, although Anthropic made it clear that whether it actually follows through with an IPO will depend on market conditions and other factors.

While many details about the company remain unknown, Anthropic could end up being the only $1 trillion IPO worth buying.

Yeah, that’s totally not advertising masquerading as news.

Now, the timing of this “warning” coinciding with the leadup to the IPO is no accident. It’s obvious that they are trying to hype the AI product up so they can get gullible investors to buy into their company so they can continue their money burning activities with no hope of recouping that investment money. Of course, the mainstream media being the mainstream media didn’t really connect the dots. They fell for this obvious BS hook line and sinker. These are some of the headlines I ran across on this subject:

Anthropic warns that AI could soon escape human control, calls for global freeze on development (ABC)
Will artificial intelligence soon escape human control? (The Economist)
‘Human role narrowing’: Anthropic calls for global AI slowdown as systems could escape control (France 24)
Anthropic calls for pause on global AI development amid signs it could escape human control (National Post)
‘Slow Down…’, What Is AI ‘Recursive Self-improvement’ That Anthropic Has Warned About? (First Post)

Congratulations to the mainstream media for, once again, showing that you are a bunch of gullible morons. Here’s your prize:
