Video: Why It Is Impossible To Build a News Website

Welcome to episode 3 of my news video’s. Today’s topic is what it’s really like to build a news website.

Welcome to episode 3 of my video news content. This video can be found directly on YouTube or in the embed video.

One of the reoccurring themes I see when discussing why mainstream media is so bad at journalism is the question of why no one is building a news website to show up the legacy media.

From an outsider perspective, yes, there are lots of tools to build such a site. WordPress certainly exists and web hosting services are certainly plentiful. So, it is easy to assume that it is trivial to set something up. Yet, that simply doesn’t happen for some reason. Is it laziness? Not really.

I have been building Freezenet.ca since 2013 and I have more than enough knowledge in this very subject. So, in this video, I break down the reasons why building a fact based independent news website is substantially more difficult than you might think. At the very least, I hope this video demystifies some of the reasons why independent news sites almost never break through despite the void left behind by major media outlets.

On a side note: in this video, I learned how to incorporate Illustrator into my video editing software. I have to say, it was a lot of fun building the frames and taking advantage of PNG files having the ability to have a transparent background. I flipped back and forth between background styles a lot so I could produce some very basic animations in this video. I also learned a lot while making various objects in Illustrator in the process. So, that was pretty cool at least.
