Review: Hanson – MMMBop (Pop)

This review covers the pop rock track Hanson – MMMBop.

This track was released in 1997 on the album Middle of Nowhere.

The track starts off with some guitars and a drum kit. Non-lyrical vocals then come into the track. Shortly after, a verse comes in. This is joined by an additional guitar. Male backup vocals do come in after a bit.

From there, the vocals take the track into the main chorus. This is backed by vinyl scratching. After that, the vocals take the track into the next verse. The vocals then take the track into another round of the main chorus. The vocals extend the main chorus before they take the track into another round of the main chorus.

In the next section, two different vocals sing different lyrics for a bit. After that, a modified main chorus returns to the track. The regular main chorus then comes in again.

After that, another verse comes in before the track starts breaking down. The vocals and an organ lead the track out fairly quickly.

The first thing that comes to mind for me when listening is the fact that the lyrics are virtually impossible to understand. I get that the main chorus isn’t actually lyrical, but the verses actually do have lyrics. Unfortunately, I couldn’t really understand the words, so I couldn’t even begin to figure out if there is any meaning behind it.

What this track does successfully is offer a general sense of positivity. This can definitely be heard through the non-lyrical main chorus and the overall upbeat sound. It’s unfortunate no real meaning can be gleaned from the track, so it’s simply left to guesswork if there is a positive message anywhere.

Meanwhile, the ending seems a bit rushed. It more or less happens right at the end of a verse. As such, it does end on a bit of an awkward note.

Overall, this track has its strengths and weaknesses. On the strengths, it has an overall positive mood that can be heard through the non-lyrical main chorus and overall sound. The weaknesses include the fact that the lyrics are virtually impossible to understand and it ends on an awkward note. As a result, it’s an OK track, but nothing big.
