This review covers the punk rock track Autopilot Off – Make a Sound.
This track was released in 2004 on the album Make a Sound.
The track starts with a guitar. The main vocals join the track right after. After that, the drum kit and rest of the guitars join the track.
After a few extra snare hits, the vocals take the track into the main chorus. This is capped off with a few extra snare hits as the vocals take the track into the next verse. Backup vocals join the track part way through.
From there, a few extra snare hits leads the track into the next round in the main chorus. At the end of that section, the lead guitars back off a fair bit. Lines from the main chorus is repeated. Backup vocals then join in a non-lyrical manner.
After that, the track goes back into the main chorus again. The main chorus is extended. Extra snare hits make an appearance and the guitars lead the track out.
One thing that sticks out to me about this track is the guitar work. While it pushes the track pretty much the whole time, they do sound great throughout. There is a brief reprieve part way through to offer a small amount of dynamic sound. Overall, I think they sound great.
Meanwhile, the vocals sound great. It’s easy to get a particular vocal sound for punk rock (Sum 31 comes to mind), but this track shows that punk rock vocals don’t necessarily have to sound like that. In this case, it works quite well.
The lyrics are quite dark. The title of the track is a bit misleading given the lyrical themes. It certainly helps to make this track stand out as offering something different then so many other tracks out there by this time.
Overall, this is a great track. It offers great guitar work and great vocals. The lyrics are darker and helps give this track a different feel then so many others out there. So, an overall great track that I’d definitely recommend.
