One of the franchises I’ve had some experience in, but surprisingly never wrote a review for, was the Donkey Kong Country series. I’m hoping to rectify that oversight in my library with this game. While not the original games, it’s at least better than nothing.

One thing that I was noticing while playing is some of the subtle differences in this game to previous instalments. Each character had two hits instead of one. What’s more, you were less switching between two characters as you were getting additional abilities by having both characters to play with. Banana coins didn’t seem to grant you extra bananas as well, so I am curious to see where that mechanic will lead.

Still, despite that, there are definitely similarities to the older games. There’s the barrel blast series where timing helps you out, the throwing of barrels, and a few additional familiar features in a now more fully 3D environment… despite it being a 2D style game.

Anyway, I wanted to hear from you. What are your thoughts on this game?

For those who have played this game, what are your thoughts? Did you think it was enjoyable or do you think it was more just a throwback style game that does little for you?

For those who have played other Donkey Kong Country games, but not this one, what did you think of what you saw here? Does this look like a game you could totally see yourself checking out or does this kind of series belong more in the past for you?

Also, for those who haven’t played any of the Donkey Kong Country games, what are your thoughts on this one? Does this look like a game you could see yourself picking up and playing or do you think it just seems odd these days to see a 2D style game with more modern graphics?
