Review: Liquid Soul & DJ Dream – Liquid Dream (Sean Tyas Remix) (Psytrance)

This review covers the psytrance track Liquid Soul & DJ Dream – Liquid Dream (Sean Tyas Remix).

This track was released in 2020 as a single.

The track starts off with an effect and a synth. Pads back all of this as they double as a bassline. A synth effect then makes an appearance. An additional synth effect makes an appearance along with a voice sample. The voice sample is pitch shifted and comes from Willy Wonka and the Chocolate factory. After a few additional effects, the bassline comes in along with parts of the main drum kit.

Several synth effects play out. A part of the voice sample makes another appearance as a synth melody gradually fades in. There is a drill kick effect followed up by a high hat. Everything then drops out with the synth melody gradually fading out, but not completely. The melody then gradually starts fading back in along with a number of effects. Eventually, a second synth melody starts fading in as the first synth melody fades out completely. The voice sample makes another appearance. This is followed up by another effect.

From there, there is a sweep and the kick and bassline returns. Another synth melody then starts to fade in. The bassline alternates in structure. The first synth melody then starts to fade in as well as a synth effect. The effect drops out and the first synth melody plays out in full. The kick then goes up in pitch and is followed up by a high hat. Then, the synth pads return and the drum kit drops out completely. The melodies then fade out and the voice sample makes a return. Additional pitch shifting is applied to the added delay effect. Several synth effects then take over.

The drum kit returns along with an added synth melody. The kick then pitches up temporarily before going back to normal. Additional synth effects then start making appearances. The kick then pitches up temporarily again and several effects drop out.

One of the synth melody then starts to fade in before fading back out again. Filtering then starts getting added to several elements. The track is then led out by multiple synth effects.

One thing I like about the track is the atmospherics it has. Like a lot of good psychedelic trance tracks, there are several of these effects that really give this track a good overall sound. The pitching effects and eclectic sound all come together nicely here.

Another thing I do like is that this track has great melodies. I think this is where a lot of psytrance tracks go wrong in that they simply forget the melody. In the process, they drop one of the main draws to the genre in the first place. This track adds that in and makes this track an enjoyable one to listen to.

Probably one of the debatable aspects is the use of a voice sample taken from one of the most heavily sampled movies out there. In this case, I don’t mind it because it’s been warped so much, I didn’t immediately recognize it at first. As a result, it became part of the tracks experience.

Overall, this is a great track from beginning to end. It has great atmospherics and effects. The melodies help bolster the tracks quality. Also, the way the voice sample is used isn’t bad. So, a great track overall in my opinion.
