This review covers the alternative metal track Godsmack – I Stand Alone.
This track was released in 2003 on the album Faceless.
The track starts with a guitar in one channel. After that, the guitars come in more full with both channels. The drum kit then joins the track. After that, the vocals join the track shortly after.
The drum kit pulls a bit back for a short period of time before the vocals take the track into the main chorus. Right after, the vocals take the track into the next verse. Backup vocals make an appearance before the main vocals take the track into the main chorus. Backup vocals make another appearance part way through. A whisper vocal also makes an appearance as well. This is capped off with a short instrumental section.
The guitars pull back a fair bit as the vocals take the track into the next verse. Backup vocals are also present in this part of the track as well. The lead guitars rejoin the track. A short guitar solo with a subtle wah effect makes an appearance as well.
After that, the vocals take the track into the main chorus. Like last time, the backup vocals also join in part way through. After a bit, everything drops out and an effect replaces everything. That effect leads the track out.
For me, the logical place to start is the guitars. I really like the heavier sound that they project. It really gives the track a nice presence. As an added bonus, they also nicely back the vocals in projecting that emotion of defiance built into the lyrical theme.
The vocals sound pretty solid. I honestly don’t have any complaints about them and they add a nice sense of progression throughout the track.
Probably the only thing I can see holding this track back is that it has that “sameness” sound throughout the track. Generally, it has one particular sound and it just more or less stays there which gives the track that hint of painess.
Overall, this is a nice solid track. It’s got good vocal elements and the guitars add a very nice overall presence throughout. It could have used a bit more variety in the sound throughout, but otherwise, it’s hard to really point out any flaws in the track otherwise. So, a track that gets a thumbs up from me.
