Welcome to the 228th instalment of our first impression video series. Today, we are playing the Nintendo Switch game, Pokemon Violet for the first time. You can check out the video directly on YouTube or in the embed below:
As I’ve noted in the video, I have a rather unusual story with Pokemon. My first exposure to the franchise was through the cartoon series. I… didn’t like it. I thought it was full of cringe and it pretty much soured my impression of the video game series.
Well, fast forward many years later and I found myself reviewing games for freezenet.ca. Eventually, I was going to have to plug my nose and play at least one entry. So, I played the original Game Boy game, thinking I’ll probably just fail it and move on. Well, as it turns out, the game was (probably not a surprise to many) much different than the cartoon. What’s more… I ended up liking it? That was quite the surprise to me anyway.
So, I ended up playing a couple of Pokemon games, following some of the different generations even and enjoyed them quite a bit. So, I’ve gotten pretty familiar with the concepts of the franchise heading into this one. Admittedly, I’ve skipped a few generations to get here this quickly, but I am now finally able to feature this franchise on the channel.
Going into this one, it was interesting to see what it was like to play one of these games with modern graphics. Admittedly, the graphics weren’t quite what I was expecting as it didn’t feel like a 2022 game. Still, it was also interesting to see how little the formula changed in many different ways. Whether it was the starter Pokemon choice, the Pokedex, the rival, and capture system, there was a lot of familiar elements that date back to the first games in this franchise. I’ll definitely be interested in seeing where this game goes to from here.
I also wanted to hear from you. What are your thoughts on this game?
For those who have played this game, what did you think of this one? Was this a great game that had a nice return to form of what makes these games great or did you think it was too much of the same that made you tired of the franchise?
For those who haven’t played this game, but have played others in the franchise, what did you think of with what you saw? Does this look like a game you’d be totally into playing or do you think that you would be better off playing the older titles?
Also, for those who haven’t played any of the Pokemon games, what are your thoughts? Does this look like a game you might be interested in trying because of the different RPG style found in the game or does the vibe seem too cutesy for your tastes? Let us know in the comments below!
