Week 6: Inside the Senate Schedule on Bill C-11 Hearings Drew Wilson | October 24, 2022 An additional two hearings are scheduled for this week. We take a look at what’s next on the C-11 roster. There’s a lot of hearing related content to go through. In fact, as you might have gathered from the previous posting, we haven’t even gotten to all parts of the hearings yet. Truth be told, we are falling a little behind, but wanted to keep you up to date on the latest information of what is coming up anyway. So, with that, we’ll be happy to note that this weeks Bill C-11 hearings are already up. So, let’s take a look inside and see whats on the horizon. The first hearing we see scheduled is the following: October 25, 2022 9:00 AM ET The subject matter of Bill C-11, An Act to amend the Broadcasting Act and to make related and consequential amendments to other Acts David Bussières, Content creator and musician As an Individual David Coletto, Chief Executive Officer Abacus Data Martin Lavallée, Senior Legal Counsel Society of Composers, Authors and Music Publishers of Canada Sarah Spring, Executive Director Documentary Organization of Canada No real names jump out to me immediately, but I do know that the Documentary Organization of Canada is, unfortunately, supporting the legislation. no real surprise there, given that they are part of the corporate elite in Canada not wanting disruption to outdated business models. Another member of the establishment seen on this list is SOCAN (Society of Composers, Authors and Music Publishers of Canada), so, unsurprisingly, they are supportive of this legislation as it helps their members corporate interests as well. As for the other two, I don’t know their stances on this legislation at this point. As for the other hearing, we see this on the schedule: October 26, 2022 6:45 PM ET The subject matter of Bill C-11, An Act to amend the Broadcasting Act and to make related and consequential amendments to other Acts Vanessa Herrick, Executive Director English Language Arts Network Jean-Christophe J. Lamontagne, President and Founder h264 Sam Norouzi, Senior Vice President and General Manager ICI Television Jay Thomson, Chief Executive Officer Canadian Communication Systems Alliance I can admit that I do not know the formal stances of anyone on this list. The Canadian Communication Systems Alliance seemed neutral when this legislation was still known as C-10, but that’s about the only clue I could find. What can I say? Sometimes, you can strike out with these things. At the very least, though, you know what is coming up this week, so there is that. Drew Wilson on Twitter: @icecube85 and Facebook.
