This review covers the rock track John Mellencamp – What If I Came Knocking.
This track was released in 1993 on the album Human Wheels.
The track starts with a drum kit and guitars. From there, the vocals take the track straight into the main chorus. This section is capped off with an instrumental section.
After that, the vocals take the track into another round in the main chorus with a blend of a verse. The vocals then take the track into another round of the main chorus, but with a few backup vocals.
The vocals go into a brief verse before the vocals take the track right back into the main chorus again. This section is capped off with a drum solo.
From there, the vocals add some lyrics before taking the track into yet another round of the main chorus. This is capped off with another instrumental section.
After that, the vocals take the track into the next verse. Again, the vocals then take the track straight into the main chorus. The main chorus is extended in this case. After that, an instrumental section leads the track out.
For me, this is one of those tracks that is almost all main chorus. There are verses tucked away in small pockets. The odd place here and there may be a full fledged verse, but it’s all main chorus. As a result, the lyrics are almost a one trick pony in and of itself.
The vocals are nothing huge. They have a tendency to slur some of the lyrics. As it is, with the mastering, there is a lot going on in certain parts of the track. With that added issue on top of it, it can be hard to understand some of the lyrics.
The guitar work is pretty decent in this track. It actually made this track listenable, so I’ll give credit for that.
Overall, this track is listenable, but nothing much beyond that. The vocals are pretty average and the lyrics end up getting lost half the time. What lyrics there are, well, this track is almost all main chorus, so there isn’t much there to begin with. Still, the guitar work does make the track at least listenable. A passable track, but nothing much more then that.
