Review: Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers – Free Girl Now (Rock)

This review covers the rock track Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers – Free Girl Now.

This track was released in 1999 on the album Echo.

The track starts off with a guitar. After that, the drumkit kicks in. Shortly after that, the vocals take the track into the first verse as the guitars pull back.

Right after that, the vocals take the track into the main chorus. A short instrumental follows.

From there, the vocals take the track into the next verse. This is followed quickly by another main chorus. Vocals then continue on after that. A guitar solo follows thereafter.

The track then quiets down as the vocals return. After a bit, the track pushes forward again. A main chorus follows suit. The main chorus repeats. An instrumental section follows suit. After a few drum hits, the track ends.

For me, the vocals don’t do a whole lot for the track. They garble the lyrics pretty badly. I think this is about a woman who quit a job where the boss was sexually harassing her, but that’s about the best guess I have. It was difficult to figure that out.

The track features some decent flow, but the guitars only offer a bit of a presence. There simply isn’t anything that really helps make this track stand out in any way. In fact, I’d say this is a pretty forgettable track in the long run.

Overall, this is one of those tracks that suffer from heavily garbled lyrics. To make matters worse, there’s nothing in this track to make this an exciting one. It’s got decent flow, but that’s about the only positive thing I can find in this track. So, a barely passable track.
