This review covers the alternative rock track P.O.D. – Change the World.
This track was released in 2003 on a self-titled album.
The track starts with the lead guitars and drum kit. The guitars then briefly drop out before the vocals join the track. Those guitars re-join the track.
Right after, the vocals take the track into the main chorus. The vocals is backed by backup vocals at this point.
From there, the vocals re-join the track in to the next verse. A chime-like element is temporarily added here. Right after, the vocals take the track through another round in the main chorus. Towards the end, there is an alteration to the overall sound in the process as the main chorus is extended. A short instrumental section makes an appearance.
After that, the vocals take the track into the main chorus again. Another guitar element is laid over top of this. This is slightly extended, but then the track is lead out by the vocals.
One thing going for this track is the fact that it has that P.O.D. sound of heavier guitars that typically makes their tracks work quite well. As usual, the guitar work actually sounds quite good.
The problem here is that I get a sense of mismatching sound with the lyrical theme’s. The themes portrayed is hopeful and uplifting. While I can see it being possible having this backed by heavy guitars, I’m not convinced that the meshing of the two different sounds ended up working all that well here.
Another problem I see here is that the lyrics are a bit basic. It felt like two verses and three main choruses. While under specific circumstances, this can work, in this case, it just felt like this track didn’t have a lot to offer. Probably the biggest problem is just repeating the main chorus twice towards the end and maybe that is what led me to feel this way.
Taking away the lyrical aspect, the track does sound pretty decent. It’s got that nice thumping guitar work that has worked so well in the past for this artist. The vocals themselves sound pretty good as well.
Overall, this is an OK track. It’s got that sound that made previous P.O.D. tracks so successful. In this case, the lyrical themes didn’t seem to match as well here. It sounds OK, but the lyrics do fall flat overall. An OK track, but not that memorable in my opinion.
