Welcome to the 121st instalment of our first impression video series. Today, we are playing the PC/Steam game, The Elder Scrolls: Arena for the first time. You can check out the video directly on YouTube or in the embed below:

This is an interesting game for a number of reasons. First of all, this is the last RPG game I have in my Steam library. It’s not the last really large game, but it is the last RPG game I have in the library. So, I guess in a way, it is the end of an era for now for Steam RPG games. As a result, I will be moving towards RPG games found on the PS3 after this.

Another interesting aspect for me is that this is also the oldest game I have in the Steam library. Every other game is definitely much newer. It needs DOSBox to run which, luckily, Steam has at least a playable configuration to play this one. It is just a simple case of opening it up in Steam and away you go, no need to configure DOSBox settings or enter any DOSBox commands or anything like that. I’m sure someone out there has better configurations to tweak the Steam configuration for a better experience, but I’m just playing it vanilla Steam/DOSBox style like many players no doubt will play.

A third interesting aspect is the fact that this is the game that started the franchise. So, I was interested to see how this franchise started in the first place.

For clarity, to attack, you use right click and hold to swing a sword. It’s… a bit archaic, but that’s how the game plays.

For those who have played this game before, what did you think of this one? Was it a great game and a game that seems ahead of its time or is this a game that’s best left in the past for you?

For those who haven’t played this game, but others in the franchise, does this look like something you would be interested in playing or does this look a little too oldschool for you?

Also, for those who haven’t played this series at all, what did you think of this game? Does this have some cool nostalgia vibes going for it or does this look a bit too painful to play? Let us know in the comments below!
