Review: Basement Jaxx – Good Luck (Dance)

This review covers the dance track Basement Jaxx – Good Luck.

This track was released in 2003 on the album Kish Kash.

The track starts with a set of effects. Some string elements then join the track along with a few other elements. A large amount of the track then drops out when the vocals join the track. Guitars back the vocals. Backup vocals also join the track.

After a series of drum kit hits, the vocals take the track into the main chorus. There’s some synth bassline, strings, and many other elements that fill the tracks sound.

Large amounts of the track then drop out when the vocals take the track into the next verse. The guitar element rejoins the track. A couple of subtle synths briefly join the track as it builds up to the main chorus. The vocals then take the track into the main chorus again.

The main chorus is capped off with an instrumental section. A guitar and a few other elements are all that remain in this section. The vocals then rejoin the track for a verse. These are backed by the string elements. The other elements gradually rejoin the track as the vocals take the track into another round in the main chorus. The main chorus is extended as several acoustic elements drop out, replaced by several synth elements. The strings then return. This section is then capped off with an effect.

After that, a simple drum kit joins the track. A vocal element is added and everything fades out. A synth effect makes an appearance and the track is cut (likely leading into the next track in the album).

One thing I thought was interesting is the bassline during the main chorus. I thought it gave the track a nice crunchy sound. I thought it added a nice texture to the overall sound.

The vocals are also quite solid. I can’t really think of anything that really is a drawback to them.

Probably my only complaint with this track is that it’s a bit on the loud side. I can appreciate the overall full sound this track had, but there may have been a few too many elements going on at the same time. As a result, some elements end up getting drowned out. So, some mastering issues that could have been fixed with maybe spreading the elements out a bit rather than having them play all at once.

Overall, this is a solid track. It’s got nicely done vocals, an interesting bassline, and a load of good elements. It may suffer a bit on the mastering side of things. Still, I think it’s a track worth listening to.
