Review: Apocalyptica – Somewhere Around Nothing (Rock)

This review covers the instrumental rock track Apocalyptica – Somewhere Around Nothing.

This track was released in 2003 on the album Reflections.

The track starts with guitars and a drum kit. A violin then joins the track. Other violins join the track. They then hit an instrumental chorus.

The violins then drop out for a bit. After that, the violins rejoin the track. They then hit an instrumental chorus. Notes on certain elements then get longer. This is capped off with a guitar solo with other elements dropping out. The drum kit then hits a multitude of snare rolls. Violins then join this solo.

After that, the violins rejoin the track for an instrumental main chorus. This section is extended. The notes then get changed up. A few more fast hits on the drum kit and one of the violins lead the track out.

One thing this band is known for is combining classical elements with rock make an interesting combination of sound. This, of course, comes through here and makes for an interesting sound throughout.

The violins work pretty well here. They add a lot to the track overall. Meanwhile, the guitar work is pretty solid.

The thing with this track is that it ends up being a bit limited in sound. So, once you get past the dynamic of the violins and the guitar, this track hits a pretty solid ceiling for potential. While the initial sound is pretty solid, I don’t really hear anything here that takes this track from the level of being a pretty solid one to something that sounds great. Maybe it needs a splash of harpsichord here and there or maybe it needs a wind instrument to help add some punch to the track.

Still, the violins are solid and the guitars are nicely done. The dynamic of both together works quite well here. It just doesn’t seem to offer anything to take it to the next level. This is not to say it’s a bad track because I will say that it is a solid track worth listening to. Just don’t expect me to say this is the best thing I’ve ever heard is all.
