This review covers the progressive trance track Motorcycle – As the Rush Comes (Gabriel & Dresden Sweeping Strings Mix).
This track was released in 2003 as part of a single.
The track starts with a kick and filtered synth chords. A subtle delay effect is added to it. A secondary synth is added in the background. The bassline is then added. The secondary synth gradually drops out for the most part. A vocal element is then added in a non-lyrical manner. A high hat makes an appearance.
The kick then drops out and the vocals make an appearance in a whisper. The vocals have a delay effect applied to them. After that, the main vocals come in full along with the kick and bassline. A high hat joins the track. Those vocals then go back to the whisper style for a bit. After that, the vocals then return in full. That secondary synth has also rejoined the track by this point. A sweep makes an appearance after that and the various elements drop out in different ways.
A synth and the non-lyrical version of the vocal is all that’s left. After a kick, the main vocals return in full to continue. A synth then makes an appearance and a second synth joins the track. The vocals repeat the lyrics as some of the other synths start to fade in. That kick then rejoins the track and the vocals drop out for a brief period.
From there, the vocals rejoin the track. The high hat rejoins the track. Other synths also rejoin the track. A snare then re-joins the track. Those vocals then hit another moment of whispering while some synth strings rejoin the track. Those synth strings take over as the vocals drop out. Another synth joins the track to mirror the synth strings. The drum kit then drops out.
After that, the drum kit rejoins the track and some of the synths continue while the synth strings gradually drop out. A cymbal crash makes an appearance. Another cymbal crash makes an appearance the high hat drops out. Some white noise sweeps in and the drum kit drops out. The synth string re-joins the track. The vocals returns for a bit. After a filtered kick, the synth strings lead the track out.
One thing that works great in the track is definitely the vocals. In fact, they are the best part in the track in my view. They really make this track such a great track. They are articulate and really elevate this track to such an effective degree.
The synths, meanwhile, are pretty good. I thought they may have been a bit thin and flat, but they do work to help add quality to the overall sound in their own way.
My big problem with this track is that it’s very stretched out. This one, after all, is well over 10 minutes long. While there is the odd track here and there that can carry itself over such a long period of time, I don’t think this track does a particularly good job of this. Every good element is effectively milked for everything its worth and continues for seemingly as long as possible before finally moving to the next part. Because of this, I feel like I can only listen to this a few times before wanting to listen to something else.
Still, while this track does get dragged out by quite a bit, there are plenty of good elements in there that makes this one worth listening to. The vocals, of course, is a very big reason why this one is worth listening to. The synths also do a decent job, though it can be a bit thin in sound at times. So, a decent one all around, but a good one ot listen to.
