Trump Racks Up Warning Labels, But Special Status May Soon Be Ending

As the reality of a Joe Biden win sets in, Trump is racking up warning labels and faces the possibility of losing his special Twitter status.

It took 5 days, but the projected election result finally came in. Joe Biden will be the next president of the United States. While many are breathing a sigh of relief, the election win doesn’t mean all of America’s problems will finally go away.

Indeed, Trump is refusing to, once again, bow to reality. This time, he is refusing to concede the election and has launched lawsuits. This in a desperate, though vane, effort to try and reverse the election results by trying to invalidate votes that didn’t go his way.

While this is a desperate move on the now outgoing president, it isn’t the only one. Trump also took to Twitter to try and spread more lies and whine that he didn’t get everything he wanted. The end result? Trump is racking up warning labels at seemingly record speed thanks to the lies. Here are the tweets that Twitter had to put warning labels on just today (with warnings included in the quotations):

“We believe these people are thieves. The big city machines are corrupt. This was a stolen election. Best pollster in Britain wrote this morning that this clearly was a stolen election, that it’s impossible to imagine that Biden outran Obama in some of these states.

Of course, it wasn’t just today where the current president has been spreading lies. Here are the tweets from yesterday where Twitter had to put warning labels on them:

THE OBSERVERS WERE NOT ALLOWED INTO THE COUNTING ROOMS. I WON THE ELECTION, GOT 71,000,000 LEGAL VOTES. BAD THINGS HAPPENED WHICH OUR OBSERVERS WERE NOT ALLOWED TO SEE. NEVER HAPPENED BEFORE. MILLIONS OF MAIL-IN BALLOTS WERE SENT TO PEOPLE WHO NEVER ASKED FOR THEM!

….Bad things took place during those hours where LEGAL TRANSPARENCY was viciously & crudely not allowed. Tractors blocked doors & windows were covered with thick cardboard so that observers could not see into the count rooms. BAD THINGS HAPPENED INSIDE. BIG CHANGES TOOK PLACE!

We also note that there are other tweets and retweets that have also been either hidden or had warning labels placed on them in previous days.

The thing is, this kind of verbal (written?) diarrhea with so much of the spotlight on it might soon be coming to an end. With Trump leaving office in January (whether peacefully or by force) to make way for the legally elected next president, so too does the special status Trump has enjoyed all this time on Twitter. Under normal circumstances, people would get banned after receiving so many rule infraction notices by this stage. Trump, of course, never did get much in the way of repercussions for his irresponsibility.

So, if Trump is no longer president, does he continue to get special status? Twitter has confirmed that, no, he won’t continue to get special status. From the Verge:

President Donald Trump will lose Twitter privileges he enjoys as a world leader when President-Elect Joe Biden takes office on January 20th, 2021. Twitter confirmed that Trump’s @realDonaldTrump account will be subject to the same rules as any other user — including bans on inciting violence and posting false information about voting or the coronavirus pandemic.

Twitter applies special policies to world leaders and some other officials, leaving rule-breaking content online if there’s “a clear public interest value to keeping the tweet on the service.” The public interest policy was formalized in 2019, codifying a rule that had been informally enforced for some time.

“Twitter’s approach to world leaders, candidates, and public officials is based on the principle that people should be able to choose to see what their leaders are saying with clear context. This means that we may apply warnings and labels, and limit engagement to certain tweets. This policy framework applies to current world leaders and candidates for office, and not private citizens when they no longer hold these positions,” a Twitter spokesperson confirms to The Verge.

The thing is, even if he continues to stay on Twitter, or, even if he finds another place to spew his lies, he will be losing that special spotlight he has enjoyed as a sitting US president. Eventually, the media won’t be watching his every tweet with the same level of attention as it has. His relevance is going to be diminished. This will especially be true after January 20th. For someone who is all about himself, this is practically the world coming to an end. If your ego demands constant attention, losing such a level of attention is devastating.

What’s more is that the legal protections Trump has enjoyed will also be coming to an end. After Trump loses that protection, there is a whole host of legal uncertainty for him on top of it all.

With the people of the United States having spoken on the matter, though by a much thinner margin than some had hoped, there is little Trump can do about the situation. Predictably, the situation sees Trump growing increasingly desperate to hold on to power. Eventually, that power will slip through his fingers. This includes the big microphone he has had via Twitter.
