This review covers the satirical comedy track Weird Al – eBay.
This track was released in 2003 on the album Poodle Hat. It’s worth noting that this track parodies I Want It That Way by the Backstreet Boys.
The track starts with a guitar. The vocals join the track along with a synth effect. After a snare, the drum kit joins the track.
From there, the vocals take the track into the main chorus. Backup vocals join the track as well.
After that, the vocals take the track into another verse. After that, the vocals take the track into the main chorus that is slightly altered.
From there, the vocals take the track into the next verse. A cow bell is audible here as well. Most of the track drop out, leaving vocals and pads. After that, the rest of the track re-joins. After a bit, the track gradually breaks down and the vocals lead the track out.
For me, the lyrics are what seriously sells this track. I really can’t get through this track without at least cracking a smile. They are ridiculous and absurd, yet creative and nails the subject perfectly. All around, it is brilliant.
The vocals also work very well. You have that twinge of silliness throughout, yet at the same time, you can easily hear elements of the original track shining through as well to nail the reference material.
Backing elements also work very well. It gets that reference material right while offering that satirical vibe throughout.
Overall, this is a great track. It’s got great humour and is incredibly well thought out. It stays true to the reference material, while at the same time, offers a great sense of humour. A great track all around and highly recommended.
