Review: Static-X – The Only (Rock)

This review covers the industrial metal track Static-X – The Only.

This track was released in 2003 on the album Shadow Zone. This track also made an appearance in the game Need for Speed: Underground.

The track starts with a snare roll. The guitars and rest of drum kit join the track. Shortly after, the vocals join the track as the guitars pull back a bit.

Right after, the vocals take track into the main chorus. This is followed up by the vocals going into a verse. The guitars pull back just like last time.

After that, the vocals take the track into the main chorus. This, of course, is backed by the full guitar sound. There is a synth backing all of this. A guitar solo then makes an appearance and the track goes into more instrumental.

When it sounds like the track is going into a third instrumental section, the vocals return. After a short vocal section, the vocals take the track into the main chorus. This main chorus is partly extended with the inclusion of backup vocals. This is capped off with a short instrumental section as the drum kit leads the track out.

One thing I really like about this track is the guitar work. It comes on full when it needs to and backs off to be a bit more acoustic-like when it goes into the verses. It generally works quite well. In addition to this is the added subtle synths throughout the track. I thought it added a nice texture to the overall track.

Another thing I do like about the track is the vocals. They work quite well in the sound department and they are sufficiently enunciating the lyrics to be understandable. So, I thought they are really well done overall.

Probably the only thing I would say about this track is that it is a bit on the short side. Still, this one does manage to do what it needs to do to be memorable, so it’s a minor issue for me.

Overall, this is a very solid track worth listening to. It’s got great guitar work and great vocals. The subtle synth added gives this track a nice texture. It may be a bit short, but it still gets the job done. Another track that gets a thumbs up from me.
