Review: Shakespears Sister – Stay (Pop)

This review covers the pop track Shakespears Sister – Stay.

This track was released in 1992 as part of a single.

The track starts off with some choir elements and a string synth. The main vocals then come in with a verse.

Some backup vocals then take the track into a quasi-main chorus, joined in by the main vocals. This is capped off with another verse with the main vocals.

The backup vocals take the track into the main chorus with a subtle synth melody. Suddenly, the main vocals come in with some electric guitars, taking the track into the next verse. This section is capped off with a piano element. It should be noted that a more pronounced drum kit also makes an appearance in this section as well.

From there, the vocals take the track into the next round into the main chorus with the more pronounced elements. This main chorus is extended with some extra vocals. After this, the track then fades out.

One thing this track feels is short somehow. The track is a little more than three and a half minutes long. However, the more or less intro section of the track is close to two minutes long. This leaves just over a minute and a half of the main section. So, that is why the track seems somehow short.

I thought the intro section did a pretty good job at getting the track built up nicely. When the track picks up steam, it actually got me excited for something more interesting to come. Unfortunately, the last part of the track is quite anticlimactic being so short. If there was an additional verse and main chorus in the second part, then this track wouldn’t feel somehow short.

Overall, this track is alright. The long intro does a good job at building the track up. Unfortunately, the climactic portion of the track is rather short lived. As a result, the track seems, somehow, short. It’s a decent one, but could have been better in my view.
