This review covers the alternative rock track Midnight Oil – Blue Sky Mine.
This track was released in 1990 as a single.
The track starts off with a guitar element. This is joined by a keys element along with a harmonica element. The drum kit starts to build up the track shortly after. Shortly after, the vocals come in.
From there, the track pulls back, leaving the guitars, drum kit, and vocal elements. From there, the track starts to build up a bit in the main chorus. After that, the track then goes back to verse.
The track smoothly transitions into the main chorus with the keys accompanying the track. After this, there is a guitar solo. This is capped off with a harmonica section. Once that part ends, the track then goes into the main chorus again.
At the end of the track, the vocals go into a verse before the track more or less ends.
One thing that is interesting is that the track has a very laid back sound to it. This isn’t bad. What makes it interesting is the fact that the lyrics have a very anti-corporate theme going for it. While this is a contrast, it works quite nicely here because it reflects the concept of underlying tensions covered up by a sense of calm.
Normally, I’m not a huge fan of harmonica elements, but in this case, it works quite well given the themes expressed in this track. In fact, I thought it added a nice atmospheric element that punctuates some of the themes expressed in the track.
Generally speaking, this track is a pretty solid track. It has a nice upbeat sound to it with some very dark lyrics. Given the themes, this works quite well. The harmonica is a surprisingly nice added touch. So, a track worth listening to in my view.
