Review: M83 – Run into Flowers (Electro)

This review covers the electro track M83 – Run Into flowers.

This track was released in 2003 on the album Dead Cities, Red Seas & Lost Ghosts.

The track starts with multiple synths. A kick and snare does a slow drill. After that, the slow drills repeat after a brief pause between each drill. Some subtle filtered white noise joins the track. Some vocal samples also makes appearances.

Everything then drops out, leaving only the chord synth. A bassline joins the track. Vocals then join the track. A snare also joins the track. Some other synths join the track. The drum kit then fills out. This continues for a bit with what sounds like repeated lyrics.

After that, everything drops out and the track leads out with a synth pad or two.

The first thing that I notice is that the vocals are almost completely drowned out. It’s to the point where I can only speculate on what the vocals say, but in the end, it is reduced down to a subtle effect.

Part of the problem is that there is so much of the different synths and filtered white noise is so loud. It is all completely maxed out on the volume front. It gets to the point where this is all you really hear at times.

Underneath all of this is some decent chorded synths. In fact, they make a reasonably clear appearance when most of the other elements drop out. It can be relaxing, but you have to really listen carefully to hear this good part in the track.

Another problem with the track is the overall construction. There’s so little variety throughout that different segments end up sounding like they are all the same in the end. So, I found that there is a complete lack of much needed variety.

Overall, so much about this track is unimpressive. The vocals are completely overpowered and drowned out by other elements in the track. The synths and white noise is also too loud. Additionally, the lack of variety in the track leaves so much to be desired. While the chords by themselves can be relaxing, this is probably the only thing I could hear in this track that is actually any good. Even then, I had to dig for that reason that this track is good. Overall, this is a hard pass for me.
