Review: Koven – One’s Own (Drum N Bass)

This review covers the liquid drum n bass track Koven – One’s Own.

This track was released in 2015 on the EP Sometimes We Are.

The track starts off with string. This is layered with some piano elements. After that, some vocals come into the track. Eventually, the track builds up into the full drum n bass sound.

After the main chorus, there’s what sounds like a guitar sound. This really helps elevate the emotion of the track. After that, the drop pulls the track back. From there, some vocals come in. The drumkit is present, but also pulled back. This element gradually gets pushed forward to help with the buildup back to the main chorus.

After that, the guitar elements come back. After that, there is the final breakdown of the track.

The biggest strength in this track is definitely the strings and the vocals. The vocals sets the bar quit high for this track. Meanwhile, the strings raises that bar even higher in terms of overall quality. That added guitar element brings the track up to the higher levels of quality.

What pulls this track back down, for me, is the way the drumkit plays out. It has a sort of half step throughout with only slight variances here and there. I normally like the drum n bass sound, but this just doesn’t do a whole lot for me. As a result, the flow is interrupted somewhat in the track throughout.

Despite what I feel are flaws in the track, I would say this is a track worth listening to. There is a lot of great qualities to be had here in the track. These qualities include the string elements and vocals. The guitar-like elements also work quite well and brings this track to another level. A track definitely worth listening to.
