Review: Justin Bieber – Baby (Pop)

This review covers the pop track Justin Bieber – Baby.

This track was released in 2010 as part of the My World 2.0 album. This track was gone on to be the track that causes some people to have violent thoughts throughout 2010 and 2011 towards any piece of technology playing this track.

The verses that feature Bieber singing are backed with mostly a hip-hop style bass drum and little else. Musically speaking, it makes these portions of the track sound more like filler more than anything else.

The chorus does have some decent enough elements that at least something is attempting to carry this track, but these elements are, of course short lived. These portions are also the most advertised whenever this track is brought up in discussion. After a few listens, these portions simply become annoying.

For some reason, this track then suddenly tacks on some hip hop rapping towards the end. I’m honestly not convinced that there was enough hip hop in the rest of the track that really allows the listener to anticipate this. One of two possibilities arise from this: This is an unexpected, but pleasant surprise, or it’s an awkward transition that makes the whole portion of this track seem jarring. In my opinion, this is the latter. If there were more prominent voice samples in the other portions of this track, this transition wouldn’t have been that bad, but unfortunately, it has that feel of just being tacked on with little regard to flow. While some might point out the hip hop bassdrum, I honestly don’t think that was enough to make the transition not jarring.

Ultimately, what good elements are in this track quickly become annoying after multiple plays. The hip hop portion was jarring and the verses had that filler feel to them. At the end of the day, this track is more of a nuisance more than an enjoyable thing. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I have to use some search engines to find out if ear bleach is a thing.
