Review: Golf (Atari 2600)

By Drew Wilson

In this review, we are hitting the course to try Golf as released on the 2600. We find out if this is a good rendition of the sport by the same name.

Gold was released in 1980 and is supposed to be a simple version of golf.

The game is pretty much like regular golf. You have to get the ball into the hole with as few strokes as possible. Each hole is surrounded seemingly by water, though if you hit the water, the ball will simply stop in it’s place.

In order to hit the ball in the right direction, you need to position the golfer in a particular way so that the ball will go in a particular direction. Once you got close to the hole by landing

I found this game to be extremely difficult. This isn’t because the game was exceedingly challenging, but rather, because it was always difficult to tell where the ball was going to go. Reposition also always takes a moment. Even after you reposition, there was no real telling exactly where the ball was going to go when you swing the club. In short, this game was poorly designed. I think it would have been better to simply remove the golfer altogether and just insert a black dot that denotes which direction it was going to go if you swing the club. If nothing else was done to denote how hard you were swinging outside of simply holding down the button, it would have been infinitely better than it’s current rendition.

Graphically, most of the graphics did it’s job. The only thing that didn’t work, and it was the important bit, was the golfer. The golfer simply got in the way of game play.

The sound effects were basic, but there was hardly anything to really rate. There wasn’t even any music in this game.

Overall, I would say this was a game to throw away. I was more frustrated with this game than anything else. Once you start actually playing this game, the enjoyment you can get out of it immediately gets thrown out the window. It was frustrating and unplayable.

Overall

Furthest point in game: Made it to the second hole before I found playing this to be too intolerable to continue.

General gameplay: 3/25
Replay value: 0/10
Graphics: 4/10
Audio: 2/5

Overall rating: 18%
