Review: DJ Khaled – I’m The One (ft. Justin Bieber, Quavo, Chance The Rapper, Lil Wayne) (Pop)

This review covers the track DJ Khaled – I’m The One (ft. Justin Bieber, Quavo, Chance The Rapper, Lil Wayne).

This track was released in 2017 on the album Grateful.

The track starts off with a bassline and some chopped vocals. From there, the chopped vocals fade out and regular vocals come in.

After this, vocoded borderline rap vocals come in. In the process, there is a very slight variance with the addition of a hi hat. After that, the main chorus comes back in again with the variance on the hi hat.

From there, the borderline rap vocals return, only less vocoded. After that, the main chorus returns again. Another verse comes in with nothing notably different about them. The main chorus comes in another time again. A final verse plays out with the various vocal talents layering together. The track then just cuts off after that.

The only thing really notable in this track is a subtle pitch-bent vocal element that plays off an on throughout. There’s no real vocals to them, they just play at random in the background.

The first problem I have with this track is the bassline. It starts decently enough, but they are left in autopilot throughout the entire track. Four bars is nice for a while, but leaving them the same on infinite repeat for the entire track is just amateurish.

There is slight variances with the vocals throughout the track. Unfortunately, they all fall relatively flat because it is backed by virtually nothing of note. The only time the track even remotely sounds decent was towards the end when the vocals are layered. With the combined effort of everyone, the track seems almost decent. Unfortunately, this is a brief moment at the very end.

The lyrics themselves are quite bland and stale. They break no new ground and wind up being the stereotypical theme of a lot of pop music.

Generally speaking, this is a very boring track. There’s a four bar bassline that is left on autopilot throughout the entire track. With incomprehensible pitch bent vocals in the background, it makes me think that more could have been done, but the quality is a result of a rush job. The lyrics are dull and the vocals just fall flat for the most part. A track to skip as far as I’m concerned.
