Review: Crystal Castles – Crimewave (Crystal Castles vs. Health) (Glitch)

By Drew Wilson

This review covers the glitch track Crystal Castles – Crimewave (Crystal Castles vs. Health).

This particular track was released in 2008 as part of the self titled Crystal Castles album.

This track certainly fills out every checkbox on what to expect in a glitch track. It has chopped vocals and the basic electronica sounds. I’m personally split on whether or not to complain about the fact that the vocals are virtually incomprehensible because, on the one hand, it’s nice to at least have a half understanding of not only what the lyrics are saying, but also know what the lyrics are trying to mean. On the other hand, the genre is glitch, so the idea of chopped vocals should be expected. The real question might be, then, is whether or not these glitched vocoded vocals are harmonious with the rest of the elements in the track. The answer, in my opinion, is yes. In fact, every element in this track really comes together great.

This was an interesting track to review because it gave me a lot to contemplate on what makes a great track. For this track, I found the initial appeal of this track really good. It’s one of those tracks that does a good job of screaming “this is an acceptable track!”. On the other hand, I don’t find myself really listening to this on a regular basis weeks down the road. At best, I can say, “Hey, I remember that track!” and, at worst, “That track’s appeal rubbed off on me after the 10th play.” I don’t think I really encountered a track that had such great initial appeal, but so little lasting effects on me. So, I think I’ll just say that this is ultimately an average track.
