This review covers the trance track Coast 2 Coast – Be With Me (Original Mix).
This track was released in 2002 along with the Phil Johnston remix.
The track starts with a kick and a synth. A high hat joins in. A second synth joins the track. Another high hat joins the track. A clap then joins the track. A synth effect makes an appearance and the high hats become more full.
After a synth effect, most of the track drops out save for the kick (which is pulled back). A bassline is now present. Somewhat chopped vocals then join the track. Those vocals have a reverberation effect applied to them. A synth fades in. After that, the kick rejoins the track. There is a quick drill of the kick. When the vocals make a complete sentence, then the synths take over.
From there, one of the synths hits some other notes. Another synth makes a subtle appearance in the background. Another synth joins the track, serving as a pad. After an effect, a number of synths drop out. The vocals then rejoin the track for more full lines. Shortly after, they hit the main chorus as everything but the bassline drop out.
After that, the vocals drop out and the synth pads make a return. A sweep makes an appearance. The pads have a pattern of increasing in volume, then pulling back to repeat the melody. The chopped vocals make a return. The kick quietly drills in the background for a moment before the full drum kit makes a full return. This continues for a while.
After a cymbal crash, the vocals return to repeat the lines from earlier. Suddenly, everything drops out except the bassline. The vocals then become a solo with a reverberation effect. That synth pad returns. The bassline also gradually makes a return as well. After that, the drum kit returns after the vocals drop out. The high hat then hits every bar before the synth melodies drop out.
Finally, the vocals return in a chopped form. A synth effect makes an appearance and the vocals drop out. This leaves just the drum kit. After a cymbal crash, parts of the drum kit drop out. A few synth effects make an appearance. One of the synth effects then leads the track out.
One thing this track has going for it is that it has a rather pronounced mood. It’s a very chilled out, yet mysterious mood throughout. This is especially pronounced with the vocals which can be quite well thought out.
A problem I have with the track is that the synth melodies seem to start out interesting, but then just repeat. You can almost get that sense of the producer simply running out of ideas and just repeating the melodies that they have in a loop. As a result, the track winds up being pretty stretched out and repetitive.
Overall, this track winds up being fairly average. It has a pretty interesting vibe that does become fully realized. This is especially pronounced with the vocals when they hit the main chorus. Unfortunately, some of the melodies just get repeated and cause the track to simply go nowhere fast. So, it is fairly stretched out. So, all in all, a fairly average track.
