Review: Ben Folds Five – Army (Rock)

This review covers the alternative rock track Ben Folds Five – Army.

This track was released in 1999 on the album The Unauthorized Biography of Reinhold Messner.

The track starts off with vocals backed by piano. A guitar joins the track. After that, the track drops back a bit. The piano continues.

From there, the vocals return with guitars again. From there, the track drops back a bit again before pushing forward with the guitars. A second guitar joins the track. What follows is an instrumental section. A sample of audience cheering makes an appearance. From there, brass elements join the track.

From there, the vocals return with the various elements appearing in the instrumental section continuing.

When the track hits the main chorus, the track pulls back again. The track then breaks down with the piano and vocals leading the track out.

One thing this track has going for it is that there is a definite rich sound to it. This is thanks to the many number of elements where there is that blending of orchestral in with the rock elements.

The only thing I’m not a huge fan is the fact that the structure is a bit messy. As a result, it might hurt the memorability of the track.

Still, it’s a decent track all around. Definitely would make for some great filler in a random playlist. the messy structure might hurt the chances of this being a memorable track, but it does have a nice rich sound with the many layers of instruments throughout. So, a decent track all around.

Score
7/10
