A big question I have whenever I start getting into a brand new console is this: which game do I start with first?
To me, the answer is often to start with the flagship game. Whether that is Super Mario World for the SNES, Half-Life 2 for Steam games, Sonic the Hedgehog for the Sega Genesis, and so on. What game in the library really helped to kick off the whole console in the first place? In previous generation consoles, this was relatively straight forward. In modern consoles, though, this became a much more difficult task.
For the Playstation 5, there was a few possibilities. One such possibility was Gran Turismo 7. The problem with that is that such a title was a little bit after the launch and not necessarily something that appeared at the very beginning. Ratchet & Clank, however, was released the year before. So, I figured this would be an excellent game to start off with.
One thing I noticed pretty quickly was that while what you see in the game doesn’t necessarily look like anything new, the response from the controller was definitely different. For instance, there are two steps in pressing the shoulder button to fire, not one. For another, when firing a weapon, there was force feedback directly in the buttons. Previously, force feedback was simply something to make the controller rattle. This was a bit more direct. So, when I was firing the blaster, that ticking you hear also corresponds to a bumping feeling you get in the controller. So, it was something I knew I had to get used to.
Another aspect I noticed was the game basically trying to showcase the capabilities of the, at the time, new console. Whether that was the particle physics with all the confetti, the special effects with some of the explosions, or the lighting with all of those shiny surfaces, the game was trying to showcase what a new generation console was capable of early on.
At any rate, I’m curious about how this game is going to unfold moving forward. The good news is that even if the old formula is closely followed, it is a good formula, so I’m hopeful about how this game is going to play.
Still, I wanted to hear from you. What are your thoughts on this game?
For those who have played this game, what did you think? Was this a great instalment to this franchise or did you find it to be just more of the same?
For those who haven’t played this game, but have played older titles in the series, what are your thoughts on what you saw here? Does this look like something you could totally get into or do you think you would be more into just replaying the older entries?
