Review: Super Furry Animals – Something for the Weekend (Rock)

This review covers the rock track Super Furry Animals – Something for the Weekend.

This track was released in 1996 on the album Fuzzy Logic.

The track starts off with some feedback and an effect. After that, the guitars, drum kit, and vocals come in for a verse.

Shortly after, the vocals take the track into the first round in the main chorus. Some choir joins the track as the guitars change things up.

After that, the vocals take the track into another verse as the feedback and effect makes a return. Right after, the vocals take the track into another round in the main chorus in the same manner as last time.

In the next section, the vocals take the track into the next verse with particularly high notes. After that, the vocals take the track into the main chorus. After that, some out of tune pianos lead the track out.

A problem with this track is that it does seem a bit dated for when it was released. There are a number of similarities between this track and The Beatles which is a band from the 60s. Given the rise of grunge, hard rock, and punk at the time of this release, this track just seems more like an outlier that doesn’t quite fit in with the times in any way. There is a lot of value in developing your own sound.

In addition, the particularly high notes by the vocals in one of the verse just sound awkward more than anything else.

Even the ending just seems odd with the out of tune piano. I’m not sure what the end game goal is for adding that in.

Overall, this is a barely passable track. It has a rather dated sound to it. The vocals end up hitting some awkward notes part way through. Finally, the out of tune piano at the end just makes this track end on an awkward note. A track that is very easily skipped.
