Review: Stone Temple Pilots – Big Bang Baby (Rock)

This review covers the rock track Stone Temple Pilots – Big Bang Baby.

This track was released in 1996 as a single.

The track starts with a drum kit and guitars. The vocals start in very early for the first verse.

Shortly after, the vocals take the track into the main chorus. This is capped off with a very short instrumental section.

From there, the vocals take the track into the next verse. After this short verse, the vocals take the track into the next round in the main chorus. The main chorus does feature some backup vocals as well. From there, the backup vocals extend the main chorus. This is capped off with a very short instrumental section.

After that, the vocals take the track into another round of the main chorus. Again, the backup vocals extend the main chorus.

From there, the vocals change up how the main chorus is sang, but then the track ends things half way through this additional round in the main chorus.

For me, the first thing I noticed about this track is the lyrics. The lyrics really don’t make any sense. I don’t think there is supposed to be much in the way of meaning other than maybe randomly pasting a couple of catch-phrases.

This leads into the next observation I have with this track. The lyrics are almost all main chorus. What’s worse is the fact that the track ends half way through the main chorus. To me, this makes absolutely no sense whatsoever. Ending the track part way through the main chorus is almost exclusively going to make the ending jarring and clunky. It is rarely a good idea to do this and, in this case, it isn’t. In this case, it makes the track sound bad.

The third observation I have with this track involves the vocals. I can see singing with that nasal sound in certain conditions. Unfortunately, the case to sing like this in this track just doesn’t exist. In addition to this, the vocalists sound high in the process.

Meanwhile, the guitars and backing elements sound OK at first. After a while, though, the guitar riff just sounds repetitive. It’s as if the main guitar is just left on auto-pilot throughout the track.

Overall, this track ends up being a flop for me. The lyrics don’t even make a whole lot of sense. Those same lyrics are repetitive. In addition to that, the track ends half way through the main chorus. Meanwhile, the vocals sound nasal and high for no real reason. Finally, the backing guitar sounds like it is left on auto-pilot. So, a track to avoid in my opinion.
